  • Oxygen depletion – Hazards posed when using oxy-fuel gas systems in confined spaces.
  • Oxidants and oxygen enrichment – Combustion triangle. The hazards posed by oils and greases. Incidents caused by oxygen and oil. The potential problems posed by PTFE tape. The need to leak test with approved solutions.
  • Fuel Gases and flammability – Flammability ranges. Thermal decomposition of acetylene. Properties of propane and acetylene.
  • Hazards posed by gas cylinders – Design and function of cylinder valves. Do’s and don’ts with gas cylinders. Cylinder identification. Using gas cylinders safely. Correct PPE.
  • Handling oxy-fuel gas cylinders safely – Do’s and Don’ts when moving gas cylinders.
  • Storing oxy-fuel gas cylinders safely – Key principles in storing compressed gas cylinders safely; includes design, construction, location, segregation and emergency procedures.
  • The need to check equipment in line with current Legislation (PUWER).
  • Design and function of single and multi-stage regulators.
  • How flashbacks occur, the need for flashback arrestors.
  • Torch design and correct nozzle selection.
  • The need to maintain correct inspection records.
  • Practical workshop session – The practical will cover:
    • Pre-use visual checks and correct fitting of regulators
    • Visual checks on flashback arrestors
    • Correct fitting of flashback arrestors
    • Visual and flexibility tests on hoses
    • Correct fitting of hoses
    • Correctly fitting a torch to the system
    • Nozzle selection and fitting
    • Opening cylinder valves safely
    • Functional tests on regulators
    • Setting correct working pressures in an ‘open’ system
    • Correct leak test procedures
    • Functional and leak test procedures on a ‘blanked-off’ torch
    • Functional tests on hose check valves
    • Reverse flow tests on flashback arrestors
    • Safe system depressurisation

WHO IS THE TRAINING FOR?

This practical training workshop is designed for individuals responsible for inspecting oxy-fuel gas systems and ensuring equipment remains safe and compliant. It combines safety awareness training with an instructor-led practical session, teaching delegates how to carry out formal inspections in line with current legislation and BCGA guidance.


PRICING

The price is £2000.00 for up to 6 staff inclusive of certification and support documentation. Additional staff are £130.00 per head, up to a maximum of 8 staff. VAT is payable at the standard rate.
