What is a Risk Assessment?

Risk AssessmentsRisk Assessment is at the heart of safety legislation and is the key to achieving success in managing health and safety. The law requires that a "suitable and sufficient" Risk Assessment be carried out BEFORE work is started. If you have not fulfilled this most basic of requirements you are in breach of the law and may face enforcement action or even be prosecuted.

A Risk Assessment is nothing more than a careful examination of what in your work, could cause harm to people, so that you can weigh up whether or not you have taken enough precautions or you should do more to prevent harm. The aim is to make sure that no-one gets hurt or becomes ill.

A Risk Assessment should usually involve identifying the hazards within operations, activities, processes etc. and then evaluating the extent of the risks involved to people, plant, equipment, property or environment, taking into account whatever precautions have already been taken.

However, certainly with gases, if you don’t know what the potential hazards are in the workplace it’s extremely difficult to spot them and produce an accurate assessment of the likelihood of an accident occurring.

Gas Safe are able to assist you in undertaking a systematic, general examination of your work activities and produce a detailed Risk Assessment that can be signed off by yourself or other member of your organisation.
