Assess the potential risks from gases
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 place a legal requirement on employers to control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill health.
Hazardous substances include:
- Substances used directly in work activities (e.g. gases)
- Substances generated during work activities (e.g. fumes from welding or soldering)
What COSHH requires:
- Assess the risks
- Decide what precautions are needed
- Prevent or adequately control exposure
- Ensure that control measures are used and maintained
- Monitor the exposure
- Carry out appropriate health surveillance
- Prepare plans to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
- Ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
