Correct and Suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 place a statutory duty on employers concerning the provision and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at work.

PPE is defined in the regulations as ‘all equipment (including clothing affording protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work which protects him against one or more risks to his health and safety’, which in the case of gases may include eye protection, safety footwear, gloves, overalls etc.

The Regulations require that PPE:

  • is properly assessed before use to ensure that it is suitable
  • is maintained and stored properly
  • is provided with instructions on how to use it safely
  • is used correctly by employees

To allow the right type of PPE to be chosen, you should carefully consider the different hazards in the workplace. This will enable you to assess which types of PPE are suitable to protect against the hazard for the job to be done.

Are all operators who use gases on site issued with the correct PPE? As an example we find users of cryogenic gases wearing gauntlet gloves which are not suitable to protect them against a spillage of liquid nitrogen.
